Biography

Frederick Edmund Ratclliffe (SN 4570) was born in Charlton East and enlisted in Ballarat on July 14th 1915. He was a driver, aged 33 and married to Annie. He embarked from Melbourne in January 1916 on board the Themistocles, first to Egypt and then on to France in June with the 59th Infantry Battalion. Just three weeks later, on July 19th 1916, he was killed in the fighting at Fromelles, and is buried in the Rue-du-Bois Military Cemetery, France.
