Assigned to the 24th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ulysses on October 27th and sailed to Egypt where he was transferred to the 58th Battalion. In June 1916 he moved to France where he was wounded in action on three occasions. The last of these, a severe gunshot wound to his arm in September 1918, prompted his return to Australia.
