Harry Stanley Brokenshire (SN 8771) born at Ballarat was a 25 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 15th 1915. Assigned to the 4th Field Artillery Brigade he embarked aboard the Port Macquarie on November 16th and in March 1916 he reached France. In August 1916 he suffered concussion deafness and in December 1917 he suffered accidental burns to his face and hands. He then developed a hernia which necessitated his return to Australia aboard the Suevic. He disembarked at Melbourne on June 7th 1918 and was discharged on October 22nd ‘medically unfit, hernia’.
His brothers David and Campbell also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
