Biography

John Gordon Letcher (SN 158) was born in Ballarat and was educated at Mt. Pleasant State School. He was single, 21 years old, and employed as a labourer, when he enlisted on August 24th 1915. He was posted to the 8th Infantry battalion and sailed from Melbourne in October on board the Benalla. He received a shoulder wound at the Gallipoli landing in April 1915 but recovered and served through that campaign. Once back in Egypt he was transferred to the 60th Battalion before moving to France in June 1916. He was killed in action at Fromelles on July 19th 1916, has no known grave and his name is listed on the V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France
