Alexander James Letcher (SN 414) born at Ballarat, was a 19 ear old saddler when he enlisted in Ballarat o January 26th 1915. Assigned to the 21st Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ascanius on May 8th and sailed to Egypt. While there he was disciplined for talking on parade. He reached France in March 1916 and in August was reported as missing in action. He had been captured at Mouquet Farm on August 26th and had become a prisoner of war at Dulmen in Germany. When the Armistice was signed, he was returned to England on December 4th 1918. He was returned to Australia on the Armagh, disembarked on May 18th 1919 and was discharged on July 17th.
His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
