Biography

Alfred Gregory Dale (SN 4767) was born in Ballarat, the third son of Archibald and Jemima. He was educated at the Humffray Street State School before being employed as a carpenter at Ronaldson Brothers and Tippet. 21 years of age when he enlisted on November 1st 1915, he commenced his training with the 14th Depot Battalion at the Ballarat Showgrounds before moving to Broadmeadows. On March 7th 1916 he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Wiltshire and sailed first to Egypt before joining the 8th Battalion in France in July. In early 1917 his battalion was involved in the fierce fighting at Bullecourt, after which he enjoyed two weeks leave. Shortly after returning from leave he was killed in action in the Battle of Menin Road near Polygon Wood in Belgium on September 20th 1917. He was 23 years of age and has no known grave, but is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing at Ieper.

His two older brothers Robert and Jack also served in the AIF. They returned safely to Australia and both are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
