Harold Uison Douglass (SN 1810/2nd Lt.) born at Ballarat, was a 23 year old carpenter when he enlisted at Ballarat on January 6th 1916. Allotted to the 39th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Orontes on August 16th and sailed to England. He continued training in England until March 1917 when he began training with the Australian Flying Corps. In January 1918, he graduated as a pilot and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, but it seems that flying aggravated his asthma to the point it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He disembarked from the Ruahine in Sydney on July 5th 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, asthma’ on December 28th.

His brothers William and George also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
