Harry Murfett (SN 4166) born in Ballarat, was a 38 year old harness maker when he enlisted in Melbourne on January 4th 1916. Assigned to the 21st Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Wiltshire on March 7th and sailed to England before crossing to France in August. Just two weeks later he sustained a bullet wound that fractured his forearm. He was evacuated to hospital in England where it was decided he was unfit for further active service. He was returned to Australia aboard the Benalla, disembarked at Melbourne on April 10th 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on May 17th.

His brother George also served in the AIF, was killed in action, and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
