Biography

George Alfred Curnick Hughes (SN 448) was born in Kerang but was educated at the Eureka Street State School in Ballarat. On August 24th 1914 he enlisted in Ballarat as a 23 year old unmarried labourer. He was posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion, left Australia in October and took part in the historic Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915. In May 1915 he was wounded and evacuated to hospital at Malta but was able to rejoin his unit in October. After Gallipoli he was transferred to 59th Infantry Battalion for service on the Western Front. He was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux on April 25th 1918 and is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France.
