Biography

Arthur Wesley Hughes (SN 936) was born at Pyramid Hill but was a 26 year old clerk from Eureka Street when he enlisted on August 18th 1914. He sailed on the Orvieto with the first Anzac fleet via Albany to Egypt. He then took part in the Gallipoli landing with the 5th Battalion. It was during the assault on the village of Krithia, south of Anzac, that he was listed as missing between May 8th – 12th 1915. It was subsequently determined that he had been killed in action at that time. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial at Gallipoli and on the honour board of the Eureka Street State School in Ballarat.
