Biography

Arthur Robert Ellis MM (SN 1194/ Lt.) born at Ballarat, was a 23 year old draper when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 21st 1916. In May he embarked aboard the Ascanius and in November he reached France to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. Just a month later he was transferred to the 10th Field Ambulance and in mid-1917 he achieved the highlight of his service, the award of a Military Medal for conspicuous and gallant service. In January 1918 he was returned to the 39th Battalion with whom he saw out the war. He was commissioned as a lieutenant after the war, in April 1919. He returned to Australia on the Karagola, disembarked at Melbourne on June 9th 1919 and his appointment was terminated on July 27th. He also enlisted to serve during World War 2 with a service number of V1160.
