Biography

Maurice Leslie McLeod (Lt.) was born at Steiglitz and educated at Ballarat Grammar School. He was 20 years old, single, and working as a tailor's cutter when he enlisted on August 28th 1914 at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He left Melbourne with the 8th Infantry Battalion in October on board the Benalla, sailing first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. Tragically he was killed during the historic landing on April 25th and is buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

His brother Ernest also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
