Biography

Henry Tunstall Eggington (SN 79/ Lt) born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old university student when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 24th 1914. He embarked on October 19th aboard the Hororata to serve with the 6th Infantry Battalion. While serving at Gallipoli he was wounded in July 1915, injury not specified, and evacuated to hospital on Lemnos. He rejoined his unit two weeks later, and served through the remainder of the Gallipoli campaign before he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and moved to France in April 1916. In July he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his abdomen which resulted in him being returned to Australia aboard the Wiltshire. He was discharged ‘medically unfit, abdomen wound’, on May 26th 1917.

His brother William also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
