William Garnet Ockleshaw Eggington (SN 1679/Lt.) born in Geelong, was a 24 year old musician when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 9th 1916. He embarked aboard the Euripides on April 4th , first to Egypt and then in September he joined the 58th Infantry Battalion in France. In May 1917 he suffered multiple shrapnel wounds and was evacuated to England but rejoined his unit in October. In September 1918 he was commissioned to the rank of lieutenant but a month later he sustained gunshot wounds to his foot and wrist. He was returned to Australia aboard the Nestor, disembarked at Melbourne on February 1st 1919 and his commission was terminated on August 30th.
His brother Henry also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
