Thomas Rosser (SN 568) was born at Haddon but was living in Eureka Street Ballarat with his wife Catherine, when he enlisted on February 12th 1916. He trained with the 39th Battalion in Ballarat before embarking on May 27th aboard the Ascanius. He reached France in November 1916 and served there until September 1918 when pain in his back and feet led to him being returned to hospital in England. After 22 months of service in France, arterial degeneration and chronic rheumatism were diagnosed, and he was returned to Australia on the Borda, disembarking at Melbourne on December 15th 1918. He died in April 1929 at the age of 56.
One of a number of soldiers with multiple entries in the original register, he is also recognised at Tree 1041.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as John Rosser.
