Biography

Gordon Wight (SN 1930) was born in Ballarat and recorded his occupation as labourer when he enlisted on February 14th 1916. He omitted to note that he had been discharged from a previous period of service only five days earlier as medically unfit. Single and only 19 when he enlisted, it appears that he married before embarking with the 39th Battalion aboard the Orontes in October. He was posted to France in November but his previous illness recurred and he was invalided back to England in May 1917. He returned to Australia aboard the Demosthenes in July and was discharged on January 24th 1918.

One of a number of soldiers with multiple entries in the original register, his first period of service is also recognised at Tree 425.
