The single 18 year old enlisted with the permission of his father and embarked from Melbourne with the 24th Battalion on board the Euripides in May. He fell ill during the voyage to Egypt and was diagnosed with tuberculosis in July after which he was recommended for "Discharge as permanently unfit".
