Biography

John Powell Wight (SN 278) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Pleasant Street State School. He was a miner, aged 27, when he enlisted on September 17th 1914. He was drafted to the 14th Infantry Battalion and embarked in December 1914 aboard the Ulysses. In May 1915 he was wounded at Gallipoli and evacuated to hospital, returning in July. On the August 8th 1915 he was killed in action near Lone Pine, and because he has no known grave, his name is on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
