Biography

Spencer Frederick Day (SN 542) was born in Ballarat and enlisted from Ballarat East on March 28th 1916. The 27 year old gardener embarked on the Runic in June 1916 with the 38th Battalion. He suffered a gun shot wound to his right thigh in May 1917 and was invalided to England. He rejoined his unit in August but was killed in action during fighting at Broodseinde, Belgium, on October 4th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.

His brother William was killed in action in May 1917 and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
