William James Day (SN 1627) was born in Ballarat and joined the 38th Battalion after enlisting from Ballarat East in March 1916. The 28 year old labourer embarked from Melbourne in June on the Runic. He was posted to France in November 1916 and was killed in action in Belgium on May 28th 1917.
His brother Spencer was killed in action in October 1917 and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
