Albert John Wells (SN 4010/4910) born at Elaine, was a 28 year old farmer when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 19th 1916. He embarked aboard the Warilda on May 25th and sailed to England. In September 1916 he moved to France where he served with the 2nd Tunnelling Company. On January 12th 1917 he suffered severe shrapnel wounds to his right leg that effectively ended his active service. He was evacuated to England and then returned to Australia. He disembarked from the Nestor, on September 24th 1917 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on November 1st.
His brother Bryce also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
