Bryce Desmond Wells (SN 6427) born in Ballarat, was a 39 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 6th 1916. He embarked for overseas service with the 23rd Infantry Battalion aboard the Osterley on November 23rd and reached France in May 1917. On October 4th 1918 at Broodseinde in Belgium he received a gunshot wound to the head and was evacuated to hospital in England. He did not return to the battlefield and was returned to Australia on the Orsova and was discharged on October 12th 1919.
His brother Albert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
