Neil Joseph Gillespie (SN 1947) was born in Terang and enlisted at Tallangatta on April 12th 1916. He was 27 years old, single and a carpenter. He was posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion and left Australia in August.
He had been transferred to the 37th Battalion when he was wounded in action near Passchendaele and evacuated to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station where he died on December 24th 1916. He is buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery at Steenwerck, France.
His brother Charles also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
