Charles Gillespie was a carpenter by trade at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 26th of April 1916 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Orontes on the 16th of August 1916.
He was wounded in action on July 31st 1918 with a gunshot wound to his arm. He rejoined his unit on the 4th of September 1918.
On October 2nd 1918 he transferred to the 24th Australian Depot Unit of Supply.
Charles returned to Australia on the 8th of June 1919 and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 23rd of July 1919. Tree No. 2359
His brother Neil also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
