Alexander Grainger was born in Smythsdale and enlisted from Ballarat in the 23rd Battalion, 10th Reinforcement on 10 November 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. On November 29th he was transferred to the War Hospital at Stratford-on-Avon in England suffering from Trench Feet and was not able to rejoin his unit until October 1917. At war's end he returned home on the Rio Negro reaching Melbourne on July 22nd 1919.
