William Lewis Harry was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, D Company on 27 March 1916 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. In November of 1916 he joined the 39th Battalion in France and served until he was seriously wounded in action on April 6th 1918. He suffered a penetrating chest wound and a gunshot wound to his right arm that necessitated its amputation. Consequently, once fit enough to travel, he was returned to Australia and disembarked from the Medic at Melbourne on October 11th 1918. He was discharged soon after as æmedically unfit – disability due to Military Service'.
