Biography

Victor Leitherland Leigh (SN 509)was born in Ballarat and attended the Wendouree State School. He enlisted on March 29th 1916. Single, 19 years old and employed as a carpenter, he was allocated to the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked for active service one month later on board the Ascanius. He arrived in England in July and was posted to France in November. He had a couple of stints in hospital in early 1917 with mumps and influenza, followed by a several weeks from early June after he was gassed. He was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium, on October 4th 1917. With no known grave his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
