Walter James Leigh was born in Ballarat. At the time of his enlistment on the 8th of June 1915, he was a single 21 year old grocer. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 26th of August 1915.
Walter returned to Australia on the 12th of May 1916, and was discharged as medically unfit on the 12th of August 1916 due to neurasthenia.
