Biography

Walter James Leigh (SN 2600) born at Ballarat, was a 21 year old grocer when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 8th 1915. Assigned to the 7th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Anchises on August 26th. He served at Gallipoli for the last two weeks of that campaign then returned to Egypt. His time in Cairo was dominated by health issues including mumps and pneumonia. Consequently, he was returned to Australia aboard the Karoola and was discharged on August 12th 1916 ‘medically unfit, heart disease and neurasthenia’.

His brother Victor was killed in action in Belgium on October 4th 1917 and his brothers Herbert and Arthur also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
