Biography

George Gilbert Jewkes (SN 930), born in Ballarat, was a married 22 year old chemist when he enlisted in Melbourne on October 2nd 1914. He embarked aboard the Berrima on December 22nd and in May 1915 he came ashore at Gallipoli to serve with the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance. While at Gallipoli he was promoted to the rank of staff-sergeant. After Gallipoli he returned to Egypt where in the early months of 1916 he was troubled by illness, particularly mumps. He served in France from April 1917 until August 1918 when he returned to Australia as a member of the nursing staff aboard the Carpentaria which reached Melbourne on October 4th. He was discharged on November 7th 1918 to enable him to complete his medical studies.

His brother Wallace also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
