Biography

Wallace Gordon Jewkes (SN 142/Lt.) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Dana Street State School. He was a 23 year old chemist when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 9th 1916. He was posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne just two weeks later on board the Ascanius. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in August while training in England and was transferred to France in November. At the beginning of January he was made a full Lieutenant but was severely wounded in action only a few days later, suffering a gun shot wound to the head. He died of his wounds on January 10th 1917 while being treated in the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station and is buried in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France.
