Charles Francis (Frank) Vaughan (SN 2163) born at Ballarat, was a 31 year old clerk when he enlisted in Ballarat on May 26th 1916. He embarked aboard the Shropshire on September 25th and in December he reached France to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. In October 1917 he was transferred to the Pay Corps to serve out the remainder of the war. It appears he was able to avoid illness or injury during his service. He returned to Australia aboard the Themistocles, disembarked on August 8th 1919 and was discharged on September 22nd. He served again (SN 14451) during World War 2.

His brother Raymond was killed in action in June 1917 and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
