Biography

Charles Aubrey Nicholas Cowell (SN 5880) was born in Ballarat East and attended the Queen Street and Humffray Street State Schools. He was 21 years old and employed as a postman, when he enlisted on June 1st 1916. He was posted to the 22nd Infantry Battalion and left Australia in October on board the Nestor. He was killed in action during the heavy fighting at Bullecourt on May 3rd 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
