George Cowell (SN 4946) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old baker when he enlisted at Ballarat on July 12th 1915. He embarked aboard the Wiltshire on March 7th 1916 and in June he reached France to serve with the 4th Division Ammunition Column. During his service had some illness problems but he avoided combat wounds. He was returned to Australia aboard the Medic, disembarked at Melbourne on October 11th 1918 and was discharged on November 22nd ‘medically unfit, defective vision’.
His brother Charles was killed in action in May 1917 and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
