Biography

Alexander Dowie (SN 516) born at Windermere, was a 21 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 29th 1914. Assigned to the 4th Light Horse Regiment he embarked on October 19th aboard the Wiltshire and sailed first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. On July 30th he sustained a severe shrapnel wound that fractured his right hand. He was evacuated to hospital at Malta and then to England where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He returned aboard the Suevic and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on July 25th 1916.

His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
