Biography

John (Jack) Dowie (SN 2189) was born in Miners Rest, near Ballarat, and educated at the Miners Rest State School. The 20 year old, unmarried farmer was resworn at Broadmeadows on May 20th 1915, documentation from his original enlistment in March having been lost. He embarked from Sydney on board the Ceramic in June. He was posted to the 5th Battalion and saw action for a short time at Gallipoli before moving to France in May 1916. On August 18th 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres. He has no known grave and his name is listed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
