George Ellis was born in in Ballarat and a Blacksmith by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement on 16 August 1916 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916. On May 7th he was wounded in action suffering a severe gunshot wound to his left arm. He was evacuated to England then returned to Australia and was discharged
His brothers Edward and William also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
