William Ellis (SN 2311) born at Snake Valley, was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on April 12th 1915. On June 17th he embarked aboard the Wandilla and in August he joined the 6th Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli. Back in Egypt after Gallipoli, he was transferred to the 58th Battalion and then moved to France. He was wounded on one occasion but was able to remain on duty. His service record has evidence of several charges relating to breaches of military discipline. After the war he returned home on the Marathon, disembarked at Melbourne on June 7th 1919 and was discharged on August 6th.
His brothers Edward and George also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
