Joseph Gent (SN 17617) born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old married tailor when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 28th 1916. He trained with the Medical Corps at Ballarat and Broadmeadows before embarking aboard the Suevic on June 21st 1917. In October 1917 he joined the 1st Field Ambulance in France. He completed his service without major illness or injury and returned to Australia on the Konigin Luise, disembarked at Melbourne on August 13th 1919 and was discharged on September 12th.
