Biography

Horace Gent was born in Ballarat East and was a Tailor by trade when he enlisted in the 38th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 16 August 1917 t the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1917. He spent three months in England before joining the 38th Battalion in France in May 1918. He safely negotiated the last six months of the war. While awaiting his return to Australia he was granted three months leave to take up non-military employment and training at the Williamson Tailor and Cutter Academy in London. He returned home on the Euripides and disembarked at Melbourne on December 3rd 1919.
