Biography

Henry Nash Hare was born in Ballarat and was a Plumber by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 19 September 1916 at the age of 37. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916. In May 1917 he was transferred to the 8th Battalion in France. In November he was admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital in England suffering from severe neurasthenia. He was deemed unfit to return to the Front and was returned to Australia on the Kanowna, disembarking at Melbourne on May 22nd 1918. He was subsequently assessed as permanently unfit, and discharged on October 12th 1918 as æmedically unfit – disability – shell concussion'.
