Sidney Hungerford Chapman (SN 5312/Lt.) born at Wangaratta, was a 27 year old bank manager in Ballarat when he enlisted in Melbourne on October 13th 1915. On August 1st 1916 he embarked aboard the Miltiades and sailed to England before crossing to France in November to serve with the 24th Infantry Battalion. A month later he was transferred to the 21st Battalion. In February 1917 he commenced officer training and in May he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. In October he suffered severe wounds to his arm and face and was evacuated to hospital in England. He did not return to the battlefield. He returned home on the Kildonian Castle, disembarked on May 9th 1919 and his position was terminated on June 17th.

His brother Robert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
