Biography

Mark Victor Tregurtha was born in Ballarat East and was a Railway Employee by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement on 20 July 1915 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 7 March 1916 and reached France in late June. He served there with the 5th Pioneer Battalion until he suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg on September 29th 1918. He was invalided to the U.K. before being returned to Australia. He was discharged on March 22nd 1919.

His brother Speedwell also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree immediately to the east in the Avenue.
