Biography

Frederick Penna was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 2 August 1915 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 27 October 1915. On 20 March 1916 he was evacuated to the 2nd Australian Army Hospital sick, suffering rheumatism, and was discharged back to his unit on 15 May 1916. Four days later he was re-admitted for sciatica before bring invalided to Australia aboard the H.T. Clan McGillivray on 10 July 1916 with a medical discharge.
