Biography

Frederick (Fred) Penna (SN 2744) was born at Ballarat and attended the Glenpark State School. He was a 25 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 2nd 1915. Assigned to the 23rd Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ulysses on October 27th and sailed to Egypt. In February 1916 he was transferred to the 58th Battalion but from this point his service was restricted due to sciatica. He was returned to Australia aboard the HT Clan McGillvray and was discharged on September 27th 1916 ‘medically unfit, sciatica’.

His brother Edgar also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
