Biography

Ernest William Stuart Barryman was born in Ballarat and was a Farmer at the time he enlisted in the 1st Remount Unit, No. 1 Squadron on 11 September 1915 at the age of 22. He embarked for active service on the Orsova on November 12th. His service record indicates he sustained a fractured arm in March 1916 but there is no detail of this incident. In July 1916 he was admitted to the 3rd Australian General Hospital suffering from influenza, and he remained there for two months. In early 1919, after the fighting had ceased, he was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. In late July 1919 he left Suez on the Burma to return to Australia. His appointment as a commissioned officer was terminated on October 21st 1919 and he died the following month.
