Michael Andrew Quinn was born in Ballarat, was single and a Barman when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, D Company on 21 March 1916 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. On 11 April 1917, while serving with the 46th battalion in France, he was wounded in action with a shell wound to the right foot. It was qualified as 'slight' and he was hospitalised with the 2nd Australian Hospital in Southall, then to Weymouth where he was furloughed to Australia on 6 February 1918.
His brother also served: Pte John Gerard Quinn, 1st Australian General Hospital, returned to Australia, 10 September 1917 (Tree No. 2678)
