William Watson Evans (SN 1310) born at Stawell, was a 32 year old miner when he enlisted in Adelaide in November 1914. On February 2nd 1915 he embarked aboard the Clan Macgillivray bound for service at Gallipoli with the 12th Infantry Battalion. Illness forced his evacuation in October and then his return to Australia on the Ulysses. He reached Melbourne on February 5th 1916 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, heart strain’ on March 21st. He re-enlisted on October 15th 1917 but was discharged medically unfit just a week later.
His brother Charles also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
