Charles Ogwin Evans MM (SN 5365) born at Ballarat, was a 31 year old stevedore when he enlisted in Melbourne on March 1st 1916. On July 3rd he embarked aboard the Ayrshire and sailed to England. Much of the remainder of 1916 was taken up at Bulford Hospital. In March 1917 he moved to France where he served with the 5th Infantry Battalion. In September he was gassed but was able to rejoin his unit two months later. The high point of his service came in August 1918 when his courage as a runner under heavy artillery fire earned for him the Military Medal. He returned to Australia aboard the Orontes, reached Melbourne on January 30th 1919 and was discharged on March 9th.
His brother William also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
