Henry James Whitefield (SN 1927) born in Hobart, was a 44 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 18th 1916. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Orontes on August 16th and sailed to England. He had difficulty training in the colder English conditions, and he was found to be suffering severe rheumatism and to have understated his age. He was 51. He was returned to Australia aboard the Pakeha, disembarked at Melbourne on October 22nd 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on November 29th.

His sons Henry Norman and Reginald also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
