Henry Roy Edwards (SN 444) was born in Ballarat West and attended the Pleasant Street State School. He was 21 years old, single, and working as a horse collar maker, when he enlisted on March 30th 1916. He joined the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in May on board the Ascanius, destined for the battlefields of France. On October 31st 1917 he was killed in action at Armentieres, and buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, France. He was 22 years of age.
His brother Joseph died of wounds received in Belgium in August 1916 and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
