Biography

John Doyle (SN 3056) born in Ballarat, was a 30 year old fitter when he enlisted with his brother Patrick on January 8th 1917. He sailed on the Ballarat on March 19th , first to England and then to France in August to serve with the 38th Infantry Battalion. In Belgium on October 4th 1917 he suffered severe shrapnel wounds to his chest, back and arms and was evacuated to hospital. The seriousness of his wounds meant he was returned to Australia aboard the Llanstephen Castle, disembarked at Melbourne on April 16th 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on May 24th .

His brother Patrick also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
